So in March I think I'm going to try to watch a different movie every night... and if I think there's a feminist message in it- or if it was important to pop culture for women... I'll write about it!
I'll start off with Amelie. I didn't really know what this movie was about... I just knew that it was in French, I thought it looked like a love story... and from the previews it looked beautiful and interesting.
And I was right... kinda. What I thought was powerful about this movie from a feminist standpoint was that, even though it was a love story... that wasn't the focus of the movie at all. The focus was mostly on a strange girl that kept to herself most of the time and had a vivid imagination... even as an adult.
Although she was quiet and didn't really interact with people... Amelie is quite a strong character. If she doesn't like someone, she'll do something about it right away and create a certain sense of justice. In contrast- if she does like someone- she'll do something nice for them and try to make their day. There's some balance in that I think that people can probably relate to. Shy- but takes action. Loves others- but doesn't always show it upright. Wants to be loved- but she's scared.
Amelie is a pretty unique character as well and the story is pretty unique... so although I don't know if anyone can totally relate to her situation... I'm sure someone can relate to parts of the character. For example if Beverly Goldberg from The Goldberg's saw this movie... she probably could relate to Amelie's matchmaking abilities and her insistence of putting herself in other people's business. She probably wouldn't relate to Amelie's ways of solving injustices without creating conflict because Beverly has no problem with talking to someone directly and bringing up a conflict... Idk why that comparison came to mind... but that's what I thought of first!
Also the movie is French so I'm sure some of my interpretation got lost in translation as I don't speak French... but I thought it was cool to see a love story where the love interest of the main character isn't in much of the film! I'm not anti love-story at all, but I thought that was pretty refreshing!
Okay! I think that is everything! Hope you guys like these movie reviews... I'm sure I'll have some more coming soon! Also Amelie is on Netflix! If you speak spanish, it is available to watch in Spanish as well... so you could maybe see it without subtitles!
