Hello! This week I have some Super Bowl-related posts... so I'm a little bit late... but it honestly took me some time to think about how I wanted to sort of address these topics! So... yeah!
It was really pretty awesome that they got three of the original cast members from Hamilton to sing America the Beautiful for Superbowl 51. Phillipa Soo,(tony winner) Renee Elise Goldsberry, and Jasmine Cephas Jones sang the very powerful song "The Schuyler Sisters" in the play Hamilton. They were the only 3 female characters in the main cast of Hamilton and they played the 3 most important women in Alexander's life. Sure, Peggy Schuyler wasn't depicted all that much in the musical... Cephas Jones also played Maria Reynolds... more info about the parallels between Eliza and Maria Reynolds right here!
Anyway I think it was cool that the Superbowl put them in the show in the first place... I don't think I've ever seen 3 broadway stars performing at the Superbowl... but it's also a good sign for women. They had that powerful song about female empowerment with the lines "We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal, and when I meet Thomas Jefferson, I'm gonna compel him to include women in the sequel!" So that is showing that women and men are equals. The performance went a step further and when they sang the line about brotherhood Goldsberry sang "and sisterhood." So yes! Women are in the sequel now!
Honestly... I expected to see some backlash about this... but as far as I know, there wasn't any! I know it's just a very small little addition and it didn't really change anything... but people get kind of serious about their Patriotic songs... and people are pretty sexist... so it kind of sucks that people would still insult the fact that they said "And Sisterhood..." But that was what I was expecting!
And I did hear a lot of praise from the cast of Hamilton and from other people that were paying attention to that part... lol.
So maybe it's not something that would make or break feminism... maybe this isn't going to change anything... but it makes a small subtle difference, and I thought it was worth mentioning... it meant something to me and I needed to hear it. So definitely worth the praise!
Byeeeee!
